Celebrations start at the beginning of the year on New Year’s Eve when the traditional family cake called Vasilopitta is baked. Continuing with a two-week Carnival period of fun and good eating, fifty days before Easter. The carnival atmosphere continues during March with Green Monday, then the Cyprus Rally hits town in May. Food and Drink play an important part in the Cypriot calendar especially during the Festival of Food and the Wine Festival. Village festivals take place in August which are particularly popular among locals, who visit their native villages to see their relatives, meet friends, greet old acquaintances and generally enjoy themselves. Greek National Day, is celebrated with student parades and other events throughout the day all over Cyprus. Christmas is the beginning of a twelve-day period marked by religious solemnity and beautiful old customs regarding love and prosperity, werewolf superstition and gourmet meals. During the Christmas period, special festivals are organised in all big hotels and night-clubs.
